Illinois faces third-largest resident exodus in U.S., IRS reports

The most important numbers about Illinois' population loss may come from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS has detailed data on how many taxpayers are filing returns and their income by state.

Recent figures released by the IRS this past month indicate continued financial challenges for Illinois. The state is losing taxpayers, along with billions of dollars in income. "Our tax base is fleeing," said a source familiar with the matter.

Overall, Illinois experienced a net loss of 87,000 residents. While 175,000 people moved into Illinois from other states, 262,000 left. This loss was the third-largest in the country, following California and New York.
