State Representative David Friess has shared recent developments and events from his district and across Illinois. One of the highlights was the successful conclusion of the 2024 Du Quoin State Fair, which ran for 11 days starting August 23. The fair featured a variety of attractions, including free entertainment like Poppin’ Penelope’s balloon exhibit and Nathan’s Spray Monay demonstration, along with popular events such as the USAC Silver Crown series and ARCA races.

"The Du Quoin State Fair exemplifies the spirit of Southern Illinois," said Rep. Friess. "It’s an event that brings us together, celebrates our heritage, and showcases the best of our region."

Additionally, Rep. Friess visited schools in his district to distribute State of Illinois coloring books to students in grades four and five. He also engaged with students by explaining the role of a State Representative.

"I had a wonderful time meeting with students this week," Rep. Friess said.

In another significant event, a section of Route 51 was named in honor of Lance Corporal Drew M. Uhles. This ceremony was hosted by State Senator Terri Bryant and Rep. Friess on September 14 in Du Quoin.

"LCpl. Uhles embodied the courage and patriotism that makes our nation the greatest place on Earth," said Sen. Bryant.

"This highway dedication is a testament to his bravery," added Rep. Friess.

Meanwhile, there is ongoing debate regarding Illinois' Pretrial Fairness Act, part of the SAFE-T Act passed in January 2021 that eliminated cash bail in Illinois. Critics argue it compromises public safety by allowing potentially dangerous individuals to be released while awaiting trial.

The House Republican Truth in Public Safety Working Group has proposed several bills aiming to address these concerns, though none have been granted public hearings by the Democrat-controlled House.
