State Representative David Friess has introduced House Bill 1206, which aims to address law enforcement shortages in Illinois. The bill proposes a student loan repayment assistance program for former police officers. This initiative, known as the Returning Police Officers Loan Repayment Assistance Program, seeks to amend the Higher Education Student Assistance Act.
Rep. Friess stated, “This legislation is about two things: supporting those who have served our communities and filling the growing gaps in law enforcement across Illinois.” He emphasized that HB1206 provides financial relief to officers wishing to return to their profession.
The program will be managed by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. It offers eligible police officers up to $6,000 per year in loan repayment assistance for up to five years or until their loans are paid off. Priority will be given to officers who left for reasons other than retirement or permanent disability and those currently working in shortage areas.
Friess added, “Communities across Illinois are struggling to maintain adequate law enforcement coverage, and this bill is a meaningful step toward filling those gaps.” He highlighted the importance of incentivizing officers to return and serve where they are most needed.
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission will oversee the implementation of this program through rulemaking procedures.
