The mayor and the city council of the City of Waterloo, Illinois is seeking assistance for the Purple Heart City Project.

The city was recently designated a "Purple Heart City" as it recognizes and honors the service and sacrifices of American men and women in uniform.

Therefore, the city is raising funds to buy a Purple Heart Monument to be placed at the Veteran’s Memorial at Lakeview Park. Donations of any amount are being sought. Donations worth $200 or more will be recognized on a bronze marker by the monument. The donations can be sent to the American Legion, P.O. Box 82, Waterloo, Illinois.

The monument is expected to be unveiled Aug. 7 on the occasion of Purple Heart Day.

In other city business, a drug forum for drug-free communities is going to be held March 10 at Hope Christian Church. There is going to be a Photovoice Youth Photo Gallery Walk. Cara Filler, an international prevention speaker, is going to give a powerful message for adults and youth (sixth graders and older). The message will be geared toward open communication and making positive decisions.

In another message, Mayor Tom Smith asks citizens to take care of the electrical systems of old homes, which are more likely to have an electrical fire than newer homes.
