Anna Jonesboro Community High School District 81 Board met March 20.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School held its regular meeting on March 20, 2017. Upon roll call at 7:00 p.m. the following members were present: Mr. Housman, Mr. Hughey, Dr. Blakely, Mr. Edwards, and Mr. McGrath. Also present was Superintendent Wright and Brett Detering. Mrs. Boget attended via phone. Dr. Blakely was appointed Acting Secretary in the absence of Dr. Reach.

On motion by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mr. Housman to approve the Agenda as written. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. McGrath and seconded by Dr. Blakely to approve the Consent Agenda which contained the following items: approval of board minutes on 2/13/17 and 3/2/17; approval of closed session minutes; approval of payment for bills, acceptance of financial reports, renewal of IHSA membership and acceptance of resignation from Terry Osman. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

Ms. Maze represented the teachers. The items of interest presented were as follows:

AJ was represented well by 24 students at the state Beta Convention on March 1st and 2nd in Springfield. The following students earned top finish in their individual competitions: Natalie Marshall 1st in Photography, Maddie Lingle 1st Colored Pencil Drawing, Britni Helton 3rd in Recyclable Art, Colton Goins 1st in Language Arts, Hunter Miller 1st in Science, Madi Bigler 2nd in Accounting, and Alex Rogers 3rd in Computer Literacy. Goins, Miller, Marshall, and Lingle all qualified to compete in their respective competitions at the National Convention at Disney World which will be held June 29- July 2. Students attending nationals will have the opportunity to participate in additional competitions as well.

Ms. Stute's English 4 classes have just finished their Step out of Apathy Project. The students researched various topics including genocide, gun violence, teen pregnancy, and post traumatic stress disorder. The purpose of the unit is to create a presentation that informs the audience to care about relevant world issues and to become involved in research and possible solutions. In the unit, the students surveyed their peers, created group contracts and plans of action, created a meme to raise awareness of the issue, and compiled their research into a presentation.

Members of the AJ Music Department competed on March 3rd at the IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest, held at Carterville High School. Thirty students competed in 23 separate events, earning a total of 17 state division 1 ratings and 6 state division 2 ratings. The students will receive medals from IHSA for their performances.

Ms. Bottje’s Senior Resource Management classes had their mock interviews this month. Interviewers were Jodie Stewart, Chris Duckworth and Evelyn Bailey. FCCLA and Beta Club Seniors are putting on a secret student appreciation week this week for the A-J faculty. Each day they will receive a small gift of appreciation from a secret student. The week will end with a pancake bar breakfast Friday morning in the Ag shop.

The math department attended the 32nd annual conference on teaching mathematics sponsored by ICTM and John A Logan College. The teachers attended sessions on: ~ the 2017 total solar eclipse igniting interest in a new generation of students. ~ The mathematics of the SAT including an overview of the format of the mathematics portions of the new SAT as well as sample problems and resources. ~ An overview of the new SAT math test. ~ Content and resources for the SAT suite of assessments including Khan Academy. ~ Math matters - talking about math in a more positive way including resources through websites and flip-classrooms. Many of the strategies learned during the sessions are already being put into place specifically including the SAT prep material and Khan Academy. The teachers are hoping the information obtained from this conference will continue to aide in guiding them though curriculum development and test preparation. The Math Team competed at the 2017 ICTM Regional Competition on February 25th. The Algebra 1 Team, Geometry Team, Algebra 2 Team, and Pre-Calculus Teams all received 2nd place. The Freshmen-Sophomore 2-Man, Freshmen-Sophomore 8-Man, Junior-Senior 8-Man, Calculator Team, and Oral Team also all received 2nd place. The team placed 2nd overall. Hunter Miller qualified for the state competition in Algebra 2 and the oral team of Hunter Miller and Ender Schmidt also qualified for the state competition at UIUC in May. This is the third year in a row that Hunter Miller has qualified for the state competition. The Math Team will next compete at the SIUC Math Field Day on March 28th. WYSE Team members Colton Goins, Hunter Miller, and Trenton Newberry competed at the sectional competition at SIU.

Ms. Garner has been selected for the spearhead group of individuals grading the state science assessment for the state tests given last year and in years moving forward. She also was a presenter at the Illinois STEM conference in Springfield on March 4th.

The National Honor Society held their Spring Fling Dance March 18th at 7:00. This year's theme was Totally Awesome 80's. They also gave tours at the Freshman Fair on Thursday night.

Heidi Mitchell and Hunter Denny represented the Student Council. The items of interest presented were as follows:

Student Council is holding elections on the first Tuesday in April. Students are to turn in their officer nomination forms by March 24. We bought snacks and drinks for freshman fair and have committed in doing so very year. We are currently planning and scheduling appointments for the April 19th Blood Drive. The blood drive will be from 9 am – 3 pm. To schedule your appointment please call the High School office. As soon as the new officers are elected, we will begin working on the theme for homecoming so that we can begin planning spirit week and other activities.

Principal Detering presented information on enrollment, discipline, freshman fair, SAT, PSAT, and a teacher report.

Superintendent Wright presented his administrative report. Mr. Wright discussed Courtney Garner, through a partnership with SIU and ISBE, is part of the new scoring the Illinois Science Assessment. He included an article into all the boards’ packet with more information. We just completed our yearly inspection by the Fire Marshal and the Health, Life Safety inspector. There were only a few minor items that needed addressed. Mr. Wright recently attended a workshop at SIU on the new Evidenced Based Funding Model being proposed as an alternative to our current school funding model.

On motion by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mr. Hughey for the Board to enter into closed session at 7:22 p.m. for the following reasons (1) the purpose of appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employee of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public to determine its validity. 5ILCS 120/2(c) (1) Roll Call Vote: On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Housman and seconded by Mr. Edwards to return to regular session at 8:34 p.m. On roll call all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

President Hughey appointed Mrs. Boget and himself to serve on the District Vision Team.

On motion by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mr. Housman to approve FBLA overnight trip to Springfield. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Hughey and seconded by Dr. Blakely to approve Beta Club students attending the National Beta Club Convention in Orlando with Parents. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. McGrath and seconded by Mr. Edwards to approve Administrative Assistant Contract as presented. On roll call all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Hughey and seconded by Mr. Edwards to approve Superintendents Contract as presented. On roll call, 5 yeas (Hughey, Housman, Edwards, Blakely and McGrath), 1 nay (Boget). Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mr. Housman to table the Technology Coordinator Contract. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Housman and seconded by Mrs. Boget to approve Resolution 17-03-20A, Authorizing Dismissal and Non-Renewal of Fourth Year Non-Tenured Teacher—Joel Dallas. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Hughey and seconded by Mr. Edwards to approve Resolution 17-03-20B, Authorizing Dismissal of Full-Time Educational Support Personnel – Amber Detering and Trina Mayberry. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mr. Housman to grant tenure for Amy Fitzgerald-Wilson and Kyle Kueker. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mr. Housman to hire David Fleming as bus driver/part time custodian. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Dr. Blakely and seconded by Mr. Hughey to hire Mike Lohstroh as bus driver. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

On motion by Mr. Hughey and seconded by Mr. Edwards to hire Scott Finders as Director of Curriculum & Instruction. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.

President Hughey has called for the Reorganizational Meeting to be held on April 27, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.

On motion by Mr. Housman and seconded by Mr. Hughey to adjourn the Regular Meeting at 9:05 p.m. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.

Next regularly scheduled Meeting is Monday, April 24, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in Superintendent's Office.
