A new candidate for the 115th District House seat wants to get relief for residents dealing with high property taxes and other kinds of taxation.

Dr. Paul Jacobs has run an optometry office for 38 years and also owns a popular winery in Alto Pass. He also served in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1971.

Jacobs is running to unseat Terri Bryant (R-Mt. Vernon), criticizing large tax hikes that he sees happening without significant reform.

“Our families already pay the highest property taxes in the nation, which gives them the highest overall tax burden in the nation, and now we will have to pay even more,” Jacobs said in a press release. “Southern Illinois needs a principled conservative leader who will listen to and support our taxpayers and stand against the Chicago political machine.”

Jacobs contends that Bryant “joined hands with the Democrats” to pass the state budget that included a 32 percent income tax increase, according to press releases and media statements.

By contrast, Jacobs has presented himself as a “business-friendly candidate” and expressed confidence in taking on the incumbent while preparing for the primary election on March 20, 2018.

District 115 includes all of Jefferson County, and parts of Jackson, Perry, Union and Washington counties.

Jacobs will face the incumbent Bryant in the March 20 primary.
