Republican candidate David Friess recently criticized his opponent in the race for Illinois’ 116th District House seat for failing to defend the coal industry.

Friess posted a testimonial on Facebook from a worker at the Baldwin Power Plant, calling out Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Smithon) for failing to block a vote that would have bailed out two nuclear power plants owned by Chicago company Exelon.

“When it came time to decide on the Future Energy Jobs Act (SB 2814), Jerry didn’t even show up to vote (Roll Call)!” John Wilson said in a statement. “One of the largest tax-paying entities and best employers in Jerry’s district (Baldwin Power) would be devastated by this legislation and Jerry wasn’t there to stand up for us!”

The Baldwin Power Station has been in the process of partially shutting down since 2016. That year, an article in the Belleville News-Democrat reported 122 layoffs coming in 2017, with two units deactivated.

“Jerry does show up, however, for other votes,” Wilson said. “Jerry always shows up to vote for Mike Madigan as Speaker of the House. He also shows up to the post office when the Madigan campaign cash arrives.”

Friess is running to unseat Costello (a Democrat who ran unopposed in the primary) in the 116th District, which is comprised of portions of Monroe, St. Clair, Randolph and Perry counties.
