Sparta Community Unit School District 140 students suspended 940 times in a single school year

Sparta Community Unit School District 140 reported 940 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred one students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 940 students during the year. That equates to 75.6 percent of the 1,244 students enrolled.

Of the 842 in-school suspensions, 571 were given to boys and 271 were given to girls, including 448 elementary or middle schoolers and 394 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 763 incidents. There were 66 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 565 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 98 out-of-school suspensions, including 82 elementary or middle schoolers and 16 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 83 incidents. There were eight incidents of violence without physical injury. For 60 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
