Patent office takes 669 days to approve Columbia inventor’s patent in week ending Sep. 11

Patent 12

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Sep. 11 in Columbia was 669 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by B/A Products Company for a lifting device and methods for pulling up overturned vehicles and other structures. It was filed on Nov. 8, 2019 before being approved on Sep. 7, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were five patents granted for Columbia inventors in the week ending Sep. 11.
