Christmas traditions are a cherished part of the holiday season, and members of the House Republican Caucus have shared some of their favorite traditions. One legislator who has embraced a unique tradition is Rep. David Friess. Instead of splitting time between families on Christmas day, Friess and his family gather at the Friess Family Home on New Year's Eve to celebrate both Christmas and the new year. They camp out together, bringing RVs for sleeping arrangements, and enjoy quality time together.
"We descend upon my parents' house every New Year's Eve and spend quality, uninterrupted time together enjoying each other," said Rep. David Friess. This non-traditional tradition has eliminated the stress of dividing time between families and allows them to fully immerse themselves in the holiday spirit.
For Rep. Jed Davis and his family, a traditional Scandinavian dish called Kumla holds a special place in their holiday celebrations. Every Christmas Eve, they gather to enjoy this hearty potato dumpling, honoring their Scandinavian heritage. "Kumla serves as a great way to honor our Scandinavian heritage, and we hope to continue the tradition for years to come," said Rep. Jed Davis.
Rep. Travis Weaver has taken on the role of Santa Claus in his family's newly founded tradition. On December 23rd, his nieces and nephews ring a Christmas Bell to alert Santa to visit. Weaver then quickly transforms into Santa Claus and visits the children via the Ring doorbell, bearing gifts. This brief visit reminds the children to be on their best behavior and builds excitement for Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve.
"I hope this tradition and secret will last for many years to come!" said Rep. Travis Weaver. "There are few things in life more genuine than a child's excitement and anticipation for Christmas."
While spending time with loved ones is a central aspect of the Christmas season, it can be challenging to coordinate schedules, especially with a large family. Rep. Chris Miller understands this struggle all too well. With seven children and twenty grandchildren, he faces the task of organizing an annual Christmas photo at the family farm.
"At Christmas, we prioritize getting together for this tradition and adding another family picture to the album," said Rep. Chris Miller. "It is so amazing to see the growth our family achieves year in and out."
These holiday traditions bring joy and togetherness to the legislators and their families during the Christmas season. Whether it's camping out with loved ones, honoring heritage through traditional dishes, creating new traditions, or capturing precious moments in a family photo, these traditions foster a sense of unity and celebration.
