City of Waterloo Gas Committee met Jan. 2.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

Officials Present: Matt Buettner, Jim Hopkins, Jim Trantham, Gary Most, Tina Charron, Stan Darter, Shawn Kennedy, Tim Birk, Nathan Krebel

1. Petitions by Citizens on non-agenda items - None

2. Long term discount program – Matt circulated a presentation from UMG regarding a purchase plan that could potentially offer large discounts to our gas purchasing. The proposal from UMG involves a long term commitment of up to 30 years. Kyle Buettner asked if other municipalities are in such a program, which they are, and if we felt this was too good to be true. That question has been raised and by all accounts the program looks good. Other similarly situated municipalities in the program have seen great savings. At this point no firm commitment is needed, just taking an indication of interest, as UMG is looking to move this forward in the next month or two. Gary Most made a motion to recommend we move forward with interest, Jim Hopkins seconded. Motion carried 5-0

3. Comments – Matt asked about our current hedging, this was discussed in the October meeting that we would revisit to ensure that everyone was still comfortable with our position. Prices have since decreased, at this time no change to our strategy was recommended. Committee will look to meet again in another month or so to reassess.

Motion to adjourn made by Jim Hopkins, seconded by Jim Trantham. Adjourned at 6:43
