State Representative David Friess, alongside colleagues Charlie Meier and Bill Hauter, addressed the issue of drug exposure in Illinois prisons at a press conference. The event focused on incidents at Menard Correctional Center within Friess's district. The representatives called for immediate measures to protect correctional officers, staff, and inmates from dangerous substances entering through mail.
“These incidents are not just numbers or headlines, they’re personal,” stated Rep. Friess. He emphasized that those working in these facilities deserve to return home safely.
At Menard Correctional Center, staff have reported symptoms after handling mail, leading to lockdowns and investigations. Substances found have tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids, chemicals in insecticides, and fentanyl. This situation highlights the need for enhanced safety measures.
The legislators expressed frustration with the House and Senate Public Safety Appropriations Committees' lack of response to their request for a hearing on this issue. Rep. Friess also criticized the Illinois Department of Corrections’ Acting Director for not providing clear solutions.
“We can’t ignore the mounting evidence that physical mail is being used to bring dangerous substances into our prisons,” said Friess. He proposed temporary electronic mail scanning as a protective measure until permanent solutions are implemented.
Similar incidents have been reported statewide, prompting calls for immediate action and greater transparency from the IDOC.
“Ultimately, this is about safety,” Friess concluded. “We need to come together to ensure the well-being of everyone in our correctional facilities.”
Rep. Friess represents the 115th District.
