With the 2025 tax season underway, both the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting and processing tax returns on January 27. Taxpayers in Illinois can use MyTax Illinois, a free online program for managing state taxes. This platform is accessible to individuals and businesses registered with IDOR, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), or the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC). It offers various features including making payments, responding to inquiries, and checking refund status through the "Where’s My Refund?" site.
New this year, eligible taxpayers in Illinois can utilize the IRS’ Direct File Program to file federal taxes directly with the IRS without third-party involvement. This program is available in 25 states and also facilitates checking refunds and making payments via their website or IRS2Go app. The Direct File Program provides a seamless transition for those filing state tax returns by directing them to MyTax Illinois after completing federal filings.
For certain groups such as working families, elderly individuals, disabled persons, and those with limited English proficiency, the IRS offers Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. These programs provide free basic tax return preparation by trained volunteers. A VITA/TCE locator tool is available on irs.treasury.gov or by calling 1-800-906-9887.
The deadline for filing taxes is April 15, 2025. In Illinois, a six-month extension is automatically granted; however, payments must be made by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties. The IRS also grants six-month extensions which are honored by Illinois for state taxes if a federal extension is obtained.
Beyond government programs, taxpayers have numerous third-party options for electronic or in-person filing. Both IRS and IDOR offer locators to find qualified tax professionals.
It is essential to gather all necessary information before filing taxes either online or in person. Checklists from both IRS and IDOR are available on their websites to assist taxpayers in preparing their documentation.
