Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been found guilty on ten counts, including conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud. In light of the verdict, State Representative David Friess (R-Red Bud) issued a statement highlighting the significance of the conviction.
"Today, justice was served as former House Speaker Michael J. Madigan was found guilty of multiple counts in federal court. No one, not even the most powerful politician, is above the law," Friess stated.
Friess emphasized that Madigan's conviction underscores a longstanding issue within Illinois politics. "Madigan’s conviction shows the deep-rooted culture of corruption that has plagued Illinois for decades. While this verdict brings accountability, it’s only the first step," he remarked.
He also pointed out that despite Madigan's departure, current House rules remain largely unchanged from his 40-year tenure. This situation allows what Friess describes as a flawed system to continue under Democratic leadership.
"The people of Illinois deserve better," he continued. "House Republicans are ready with meaningful ethics reforms to ensure that this state’s government works for the people, not for the political elite."
Friess called upon his Democratic colleagues to abandon what he termed as protecting a legacy of corruption and instead work towards restoring integrity in Illinois politics.
Rep. Friess represents the 115th District in Illinois.
