The Sparta Health and Wellness Foundation is organizing an event aimed at giving students hands-on experience in the field of surgery. In partnership with the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, the event will take place at Sparta Community Hospital on Friday, October 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
According to organizers, students will have the opportunity to use a laparoscopic simulation box equipped with an endoscope. They will rotate through skill stations designed to challenge their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and visualization techniques—skills that are essential for surgeons in the operating room.
The event will also introduce participants to surgical instruments and provide insights into arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgery. Students will learn about surgical tool design and consider potential innovations in this area.
A highlight of the day is the Surgical Skills Showdown, a competition testing speed, precision, and accuracy. The winner will be named Surgical Skills Champion.
Parents are invited to return at 1:30 p.m. to drive students to Sparta Community Hospital for a guided tour. During the tour, students can explore various healthcare career paths and meet hospital professionals.
The participation fee is $5 per student, which includes lunch. Organizers note that space is limited and encourage online registration.
