U.S. Rep. Mike Bost argues that the choice was made for him when he cast his vote against President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package.
Bost charges the package brought to floor by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and ultimately passed largely along partisan lines adds $256 billion to the deficit and increases spending by $550 billion over the next five years.
“From the start, I have been committed to addressing our nation’s glaring infrastructure needs in an effective and forward-thinking way,” Bost said in a press release. “But the Washington Democrats have been content in going it alone, funding their Green New Deal agenda over roads, bridges, ports, and airports. To make matters worse, President Biden and the far left made clear that passage of the infrastructure bill is tied to approval of their massive, multi-trillion-dollar socialist spending spree.”
Bost adds the plan steers less than half of all its new spending toward traditional infrastructure projects while increasing funding for Green New Deal programs.
“It’s clear that President Biden’s agenda is being controlled by Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and AOC,” Bost said in a statement following the president’s recent address before Congress. “And they were undoubtedly pleased to hear about the president’s plans for $1.8 trillion in new spending paid for with a tax hike on hardworking Americans. It’s time for the administration to stop currying favor with the far left of the Democrat party and start working with Republicans to defeat COVID-19, grow jobs, and strengthen America’s aging infrastructure.”
Bost has urged the U.S. House of Representatives to invest in U.S.-made iron and steel. Strong Buy American policies would create jobs and boost the economy, Bost said, according to the Metro East Sun.
“As a conservative, I am unwilling to help the D.C. liberals fund their big-government agenda,” he said in his release.
He has also offered support to veterans in recent months and urged them to seek help whenever necessary. In August, he issued a statement via Twitter and shared the number to a veterans' crisis line.
"To all of our Southern Illinois service members, veterans, and families of those who served in Afghanistan, we will not forget your sacrifice. If you are struggling right now, know that you are not alone and that help is available," he wrote.
