Local middle school students recently had the chance to learn about surgery through a hands-on event held at Sparta Community Hospital. The Surgical Skills Experience was organized by the Sparta Health and Wellness Foundation in partnership with the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA).
During the event, students used laparoscopic simulation boxes and endoscope setups to practice techniques similar to those used by surgeons. The stations were designed to challenge their focus, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
Students also learned about surgical instruments, arthroscopy, minimally invasive procedures, and how innovation is shaping the future of medicine.
Jennifer Barbour, Director of Marketing & Relations, said, “It was incredible to see students so engaged and curious about how surgery works. Programs like this help spark an early interest in healthcare and show our youth that opportunities in medicine can begin right here in our own community.”
The event was made possible by support from the Sparta Health and Wellness Foundation.
At Sparta Community Hospital, officials state: "We Believe in Better — better care, better access, and better futures."
